The Ornate Wrasse can be identified by its striking coloration and distinct body features. This species usually reaches up to 25 cm in length, with most individuals around 20 cm. The body is elongated, with vivid, alternating bands of green, blue, and yellow. Males and females exhibit sexual dichromatism, with males typically showcasing more intense colors. The wrasse’s fins are also colorful, contributing to its ornate appearance. Juveniles often display a different, more subdued color pattern compared to adults.

Where are Ornate Wrasses Found?

The Ornate Wrasse is native to the eastern Atlantic Ocean, ranging from Portugal to Gabon, including oceanic islands, and is widespread throughout most of the Mediterranean Sea. It inhabits coastal waters near rocky substrates and seagrass beds at depths from 1 meter to 150 meters, though it is rarely found below 50 meters. This species is also frequently spotted near man-made structures like shipwrecks and jetties.
